I finally got my chance to get a formal hearing before Members of Congress on Thursday for NumbersUSA's year-long argument that U.S. unemployment requires deep, immediate cuts in immigration. I let the key numbers do the talking. Do you know them? Take a look at the top three . . . Read More >>
CATO Institute's Dan Griswold suggests that the U.S. faces a crisis in filling lower skilled jobs because we aren't producing as many high school dropouts as in the past. Perhaps somebody could explain to him that we have around 2 million native-born high school dropouts who are actively looking for a job and can't find one -- and another 7 million who have dropped out of the job market altogether. Earlier this month, Pres. Obama said he would consider any suggestions that could help improve the current jobs recession. So, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith called four immigration experts, including our very own Roy Beck, to testify before a Congressional forum. Roy urged Congress what he's been urging them to do for more than a year now - suspend most immigration.
Last month, the federal government issued work permits to 75,000 new legal immigrants. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 190,000 jobs were cut during that same month. So, not only were jobs lost, but the government added more workers into the mix. Roy offered suggestions to solving this problem, including an immigration suspension, mandatory E-Verify and full funding for the 287(g) program. You can read and watch Roy's testimony on our website, and we'll have much more from yesterday's forum on our site in the coming weeks.
Lastly, we know many of you are wanting to know how we stand on the Senate's vote this weekend to proceed on the health care reform bill. Our Capitol Hill team is currently analyzing the verification language in the bill. Check our front page later today for a brief analysis of the bill and our position.
Thanks,
